Red Lion Wombats

The Red Lion Wombats return for yet another edition of the Chiang Mai Sixes. You would think it to be quite an unusual sight to see these native Australian marsupials roaming the streets in Northern Thailand however these creatures have migrated from Australia for every edition of the sixes. Apparently, a group of wombats is commonly referred to as a "wisdom". Well, if you've ever spent more than a few seconds with these wombats you will be left utterly confused as to how that title came about. Based out of the Red Lion Pub in the Night Bazaar, we thank Kevin and his team for their support and hospitality over the years!

Red Lion Wombats Players

  • David Goern

Last year "Goerny" came to the tournament with a clear goal in mind. Hit the 10 sign properly. Ultimately unsuccessful, he has pushed that to the side and instead shifted his focus to off field in finding the best fried chicken in Chiang Mai. 4th tournament for "Goerny" and a valuable member of the team.

  • Geoff Brown

"Geoffy" is back to lift the curtains on his 3rd tournament. Has turned to pilates in a bid to get himself in peak physical shape for this year. Self-imposed after-hours curfews are out the window as they have proved useless in previous years, some times the leo's and bombay sprites have other ideas!

  • Jack Robinson

Jack or "Candles" also makes his first appearance for the Wombats. Was signed up to play in 2020 with his good mate Harry Van Der Lende until covid had other ideas. The Wombats hierarchy are excited about this one! If you hear someone talking in riddles around Chiang Mai this year, it's bound to be Candles.

  • Josh Brown

Josh is making his first appearance at the Chiang Mai Sixes. Son of Geoff, "Mission" will be looking to make a statement on the field. Look for the flowing locks/headband combo. Off the field he will probably be keeping his distance from Geoff and looking to Goerny for guidance. Welcome Mission!

  • Paul Murphy

"Murph" is another of the Wombats seasoned Chiang Mai professionals. Captain of the side, usually found behind the stumps with the wicket keeping gloves on. If you snick one you might as well walk, some would say the safest pair of hands in Chiang Mai.

  • Peter "Wooly" Nitschke

It's easy to remember what number tournament "Wooly" is up to as it's displayed on the sixes logo, that's right he's played in every one! Returning for another edition, the King of the Wombats is sure to provide entertainment on and off the field. Loves hearing the commentators mention how many tournaments he's played in.

  • Sam Nitschke

Sam returns for his 6th tournament with the Wombats. Was given the role of beer wench in his first tournament, has since graduated to the organizer of the team. Perhaps night captain? That remains to be seen. Tends to perform best on the field if he see's the sun come up whilst in the bar.

Red Lion Wombats Supporters

  • Darryl & Anne Young

Darryl & Anne return for another year. Travelling supporters and valuable members of the squad. Can be seen cheering/laughing (mainly laughing) from the sidelines on game day and joining in off field activities. Darryl toyed with the idea of taking the field last season, it will be interesting to see whether he will be putting pressure on the selectors this year.
