Cricket has spread across Thailand in the years since 2000 but the northern provinces have remained the strongest force with many young cricketers getting their chance to play for Thailand at age group and senior level. Tong, Gun and Chai have moved into coaching, umpiring and scoring, and there is an extensive roll of honour, but the real star of Junior Cricket in Northern Thailand is Nattakan "Jeen" Chantam (pictured) who first played Sawasdee Cricket when she was nine years old, quickly moved on to hard ball cricket and has been part of a highly successful Thailand’s women team while still in her teens.
She was player of the match as Thailand beat Netherlands in the ICC Women’s World T20 Qualifier that was held in Ireland in 2013 and she and several other Chiang Mai and Lamphun girls will have the chance to play in another ICC competition to be held in Bangkok in 2015. Thailand might even go on to play in the ICC Women’s World T20 to be held in India in 2016.
