Margate CC

Margate Cricket Club has been a part of the Huon Channel Cricket Association in Southern Tasmania for the past 40 years. Over that time we've had several members play with various English club sides (as well as hosting a few "poms") but this will be the club's first overseas trip as a team. Despite rumours that we're trying to get away from the traditionally cold weather of Southern Tasmania or that we're off on some grey nomads senior tour, we're mostly looking to experience a different culture and take in the friendly atmosphere of the tournament that everyone raves about. Looking forward to the trip would be an understatement!

Margate CC Players

  • 1 More Player Needed

Margate CC is in need of 1 additional player ... if you are interested, please let Brett know ([email protected]).

  • Brett "BJ" Johnstone (C)

43yo Right hand bat and right arm (exceptionally) slow bowler. Despite having the build of a likely "tonker", has a batting game more suited to test cricket than 5 over cricket (roughly translated to "bats like Chris Tavare on a bad day"). Really hoping to bowl downwind in fear that bowling into the wind may result in the ball not reaching the other end! Does have "international experience", having toured Barbados with English club Hatherley and Reddings. Briefly had an international average of 50 after 50 in his first knock on that tour but by the second game, the average was back to 25 (you do the math). Loves food, beer and having a great time and very much looking forward to meeting everyone in Chiang Mai.

  • Eric "Ecca" Monaghan (wk)

45yo Right handed bat, right arm slow bowler and master wicket-keeper. The second of our players with "international experience", having previously coached in Italy (Gallicano CC). Loves being behind the stumps or on his stool at the bar (doesn't let much slip past in either position!). Current coach of the Margate Cricket Club. Biggest challenge for anyone coming up against him might be getting the Karaoke microphone out of his hands or getting him off the dance floor ... this guy has some serious style in both of those areas! Interests include beaches, beers and bourbon.

  • Faron "Faz" Wall

43yo Left handed "tonker" and slow right arm bowler. Loves running around the field chasing the ball (and with the lack of serious bowling in our team, that should certainly be an achievable objective in Chiang Mai!). Been with Margate CC for 4 years. Passionate body builder and fireman who loves motorbike riding. Has a rig sculptured from granite which often makes the ladies giddy but unfortunately doesn't translate into terrifying pace in the bowling department. Should be amusing for the rest of the team when we set up with 2 slips and a gully with "Faz" at deep mid wicket to do the chasing. Another serious mover on the dance floor and most likely to hog the gym equipment at the hotel room.

  • Graeme "Fossil" Young

60yo Opening bowler and handy lower order batsman. Has been playing senior cricket since the early 1970s and despite not being the fire breathing quick that he was in his early days, he has matured into a master swing bowler with immaculate control of his craft. Claims that he is "a bit past it now" but is still (worryingly) our quickest and by far our best bowler. Underated batsman that has scored many a handy run over the years. Still enjoys running around chasing the leather and was one of the first to say "I'm in" when the tour was organised. Not necessarily going to be seen out late at night but happy to have a quiet beer and a chat with anyone from any country. "Fossil" has his own stall at our weekly market in Hobart where he sells his hand made wood products ... you can guarantee to see him anywhere there is a market in Chiang Mai.

  • Hugh "Huey" Williams

45 y.o, Left-arm medium pace bowler and right hand batsmen. After years of waiting, holidays and the Sixes have aligned to present his opportunity to play in his first CM Sixes tournament. Growing up within walking distance of the Sydney Cricket Ground, he is delighted to be representing a countryman team from Australia. With his formative years in Sydney’s ‘City & Suburban’ competition and the indoor cricket arena, most of his successes predate the internet and are lost in time. He is always happy to tell you his stories though (with details as close to fiction as possible).

A Primary School Principal by day, and a family man by night, he deservedly relishes every opportunity to cut loose on the cricket pitch on weekends. Most recently playing for local club ‘Chiang Mai Lanna CC’, he is known for his very occasional flashes of brilliance, performances that are OK, pretty ordinary performances and downright embarrassing displays. Coincidently, it has been noticed that there is a link with what to expect and the unfortunate timings of Friday and Saturday nights each week and the category of hangover thereafter – it’s this exciting uncertainty that makes for an exciting addition to the Margate CC team.
