Darjeeling Vets

For the first time ever Darjeeling Cricket Club of Dubai is entering a Vets team to this most prestigous of tournaments. The links between Darjeeling CC and the Sixes are known to many and we are one of the few teams who have attended every Chiang Mai sixes since the very first tournament held in 1988. The Vets squad has attracted Darjeeling players from the UK, France, China, Malaysia and of course from Dubai itself as the team looks to relive great times of yesteryear as well as create a whole new world of fantastic memories. Whatever happens on the pitch, all the Darjeeling players at this year’s tournament will be looking to be extremely sociable, always generous when it comes to supplying the beers and highly likely to be loud and proud. As far as we are concerned, There Are No Strangers in Chiang Mai, Only Friends We Are Yet To Meet.

Darjeeling Vets Players

  • Chris Dommett

A stalwart of both DCC and the Sixes, this will be his 15th appearance in this elite tournament. He was persuaded to leave his wine making activities in the South of France to see if he can turn back the clock and to support the Vets cause. He once captained the Brunei National team and yet also became one of Badgers Bunnies so understands the highs and lows of cricket!

  • Gary Turner

Having played in the first Chiang Mai Sixes in 1988 this is 5th appearance overall. As tour manger for the Vets he is planning to nurse his available playing resources to avoid the embarrassment of actually playing. He will however be found leading any social activities both at the ground and in town, at least until his wife arrives mid week for her first appearance in Chiang Mai since the youthful days of 38 years ago!

  • Lee Dawson

Lee will allow his CM cherry to be popped as he arrives to see what all the fuss has been about! A regular tourist in his six years in Dubai but has never been brave enough for the big one until now. Look out for Lincoln’s meanest all rounder who maintains he is still more than capable of being bang average at all aspects of our beautiful game!

  • Nathan Cartwright

This Legendary Aussie is on his 2nd CM adventure which sounds great until you find out he has been playing for DCC in Dubai since 2007! His ability to get fined on various tours in his search for free Jäegermeister and Heinekens is part of his charm. Always “chirpy” after a few scoops, he has assured his Vets teammates that he can still score quickly on his day and surely this week that boast will be put to the test.

  • Paul “Sackers” Sackley

Sackers, now a resident of Malaysia, makes his 4th visit to the Chiang Mai Sixes in order to support the DCC Vets. A talented right hand all rounder, Sackers skippered Darjeeling to a famous Bromley Shield win back in the day. Always a regular tourist be it it Bahrain or Sri Lanka he will be playing hard and partying hard throughout the week.

  • Pete “The Pilot” Foley

Another legend and veteran of Darjeeling who played in Dubai from 2003 until 2015. In spite of that this is his first appearance at the sixes and as a tour virgin he will have to take the traditional punishment of a quart bottle of SangSom in one go! He may well be flying after that! Like Brad Wissink in our main team, Pete had a reputation for running out his batting partners whilst in Dubai but assures us he can still provide ugly slogs across the line and turn his arm over to great effect.

  • Stu “The Badger” Matthewson

After a 6 year absence , our slow (very) left arm Chinaman specialist is back in town. A legend in these parts he will be well known to many of the teams playing this week and remember if you do become one of Badgers “Bunnies” you will be in very good company! This is his 14th Chiang Mai sixes and promises to be his best ever “Final Hurrah!” Badger will also be heavily involved in all things social as he is Army trained in such activities.

  • The Mystery Eighth Player

To make up our playing squad we have our man with no name! One of the strengths and beauty of Darjeeling CC is the amazing number of worldwide contacts we have who regard the Chiang Mai Sixes as a must play event. All will be revealed at the opening event!!

Darjeeling Vets Supporters

  • Alison Foley

Ali is a long suffering cricket widow , proud DCC supporter and CM first timer. Educated now in the mysteries of the LBW laws, Duckworth Lewis and overthrows but comes into her own by keeping the bar busy, the team hydrated and the banter flowing. Loves most things about cricket, but cricket teas? No chance!

  • Dion Harrison

He’s jetting off to Chiang Mai for a weekend of cold Chang towers and Sixes cricket, convinced that yelling “That’s massive!” at every boundary will somehow make up for his own batting average being stuck in the negatives. He is also a CM Sixes virgin but will not find a flagon of whiskey any challenge so great brains are currently working on a suitable challenge! A top tourist he will surely be leading socially from the front!

  • Paul “Jumbo” Commins

This will be Paul’s 3rd CM sixes and he will be looking to maintain his enviable record of never playing Cricket at any of them. Thai culture is at the very centre of this social animals persona and he will gladly accompany any tour of local temples and rare sites. As a Plumber of Note, nothing phases him nor detracts from his ambition to have a great time whilst in CM. He is well known to many of the DCC tourists and will gladly go with the flow all week!
