Lamphun girls win national under-17 championship

The Thailand Junior Cricket Development Fund has been supporting numerous projects over the last few years and thanks to many Sixes benefactors has recently received another wonderful return on its investment as Lamphun girls won the national under-17 championship in a competition held in Soidao in Chantaburi in August and September.

The boys and girls tournaments were held at the same time just after the Koh Chang Beach Cricket and all teams had to deal with some heavy rain which meant that Lamphun boys' campaign was cut short as they tried to add to their under-15 title won earlier in the year. Lamphun girls had an early group match rained off but then were convincing winners of their other match so they topped their group to move into the quarter-finals.

Lamphun beat Chiang Rai by 27 runs in the quarter-final contest as Lamphun made 106 in their 20 overs but bowled out Chiang Rai for 79 to move into the semi-finals. They faced Nan and the Red Caps batted more convincingly to reach 128 for 5 as Sky made 33 from 27 balls and she then excelled with the ball to take 4 for 13 as Nan were dismissed for 79.

Lamphun had reached the final with an impressive 49-run victory and they faced Chantaburi who were probably tournament favourites after beating Nakhon Ratchasima by six wickets in the semi-finals. Lamphun had not read the script and fought hard to reach 111 for 8 in the final before giving an outstanding performance in the field as Chantaburi were bowled out for just 38 to bring victory by 73 runs.

Lamphun's bowling performance was fantastic as Chantaburi managed to bat for less than eight overs as the tall opening bowler Uning returned amazing figures of 6 for 19 and Sky took the final wicket to give Lamphun a remarkable victory to be crowned worthy champions.

Sky was named player of the tournament for impressing with bat and ball and Uning won the bowler of the tournament award. Congratulations to the players and to the three coaches who took their young boys teams first to the beach cricket then straight onto the national championship with boys and girls teams.

Johnny took his Trat boys team to the semi-finals while Yok's Nakhon Ratchisma boys and girls made the semi-finals with each team winning third place trophies but it was Cher who took pride of place by looking after Lamphun girls and seeing them finish the tournament as champions.

Thank you once again to all Sixes players and supporters who have helped these teams take part in national championships.
