The spread of the COVID 19 pandemic across the world has affected the Chiang Mai International Cricket Sixes very badly over the last three years as no fewer than three tournaments have been cancelled. The 2020 tournament was less than a month from getting underway when we were forced to call it off in March 2020 and the 2021 and 2022 editions of the tournament met the same fate.
At least we were able to hold a cricket tournament in Sixes Week in the last two years as the Chiang Mai Big Bash was held successfully and we were pleased to see some Sixes regulars here in Chiang Mai in April as spectators and even as players as the Gymkhana team reached the final only to lose out to Pattaya CC.
The situation across the world has been improving and travel restrictions have been lifted regarding entry to Thailand as tourism is beginning to revive so we are very hopeful that we will be able to hold a full scale Sixes tournament in 2023.
The dates for the next Chiang Mai International Cricket Sixes have been confirmed as 2nd April to 8th April 2023 and we hope to see the tournament back to full strength next April.
We have plemty of work to do as parts of the outfield at Gymkhana need relaying and the nets were badly damaged by a fallen tree and will need to be rebuilt. Cricket in Chiang Mai has survived as Gymkhana Club have just returned from playing Royal Bangkok Sports Club and also enjoyed victory in their annual match against British Club.
17 men’s teams and one ladies team have already paid their team fees as they have been happy to roll them over to future tournaments having entered for 2020. There are still places avialable in 2023 for teams old and new and we are hoping to hold a tournament with five levels of men’s competitions and a laides competition as we return to the traditional Chiang Mai Sixes format.
Thank you to all teams, players, offcials and spectators for your supprt over the three years since we last saw most of you and we are looking forward so much to seeing you again in April 2023.
